Hurja Piruetti’s dancers achieved great success in the Dance Grand Prix competition in Italy (19th to 23rd June 2023). Nearly 50 Hurja dancers and supporters took part in the annual competition. There were hundreads participants, circa 100 choreographies, and competitors from Japan, the USA, Mexico, Greece, Italy and Turkey in addition to Finland. Hurja Piruetti was awarded the grand prize of Dance Grand Prix Italy 2023! In addition, we reached top placements in Hip Hop (2nd), ballet (3rd), as well as received a special mention in the choreography category. Hurja Piruetti’s choreographies were made by Katja Köngäs, Sathis Hettithanthri, Janna Westerlund, Shanti Grönholm, Paula Viitanen and Hanna Välimäki. This trip has been very much awaited and prepared for a long while. The main purpose was to have new exciting experiences together and to get to know different dance cultures and maybe even make new friends.
Over the last few weeks, “The Story Project in Dance” has travelled to each of the National Youth Counsel locations in Sri Lanka: Maharagama – Colombo, Eraminiyaya - Hambantota, and Bellwood – Kandy. We have been meeting, working and sharing together with these amazing future dance teachers, focusing on movement qualities, some technical questions as well as choreographic tools.
Invincible Dance Studio Director Dileepa Ariyarathna has been a primary organizer of the project and the teacher on location in Sri Lanka. His commitment toward the project and enthusiasm to develop the Sri Lankan dance community have been fantastic, and we wholeheartedly appreciate the effort and commitment to this project!
Another organizer of the project, Hurja Piruetti Dance Institute (Finland), started building a bridge between Finland and Sri Lanka through the medium of dance in 2019 with Derana TV. Since that first cultural exchange program, Hurja Piruetti Dance Institute has continued artistic and educational collaborations with young Sri Lankan dancers, of which “Story Project in Dance” is the latest one.
Step by Step
Our school visits in connection with Raseborg's city plan for cultural education have started for the spring semester. Now it's time for the Swedish schools' fifth graders to try dance.
More schools to come. Our teachers Sathis and Sinja have soon gone around the whole of Raseborg.
Today, in the students with special need training, we thought about dance teaching from the perspective of gender diversity, we did movement experiments to question roles, we went through teacher development projects related to, for example, concentration and endurance. There's still time for the wompats and kalsari boys to compete.
Thank you to the participants and trainers for a rewarding day ?
The training is part of the ESBM2 project, which is implemented as an educational project co-ordinated by Musiikkiopisto Arkipelag and Hurja Piruetti in Finland and Uusimaa in 2022-2023.
